Oak Ridge Nature School Summer Attire and Essentials

Summer is a time for fun in the sun and outdoor adventures. If your child is attending Oak Ridge Nature School, it's important to dress them appropriately for the hot and sunny weather.

Here are some tips and essentials for keeping your child comfortable and safe during the summer months.

Oak Ridge Nature School participates in the Amazon Affiliate Program. Some of the links below are affiliate links. This means that at zero cost to you, I will earn a commission if you click through the link and finalize a purchase.

Sun Protection

Sun protection is crucial during the summer months. Make sure your child wears a hat with a brim to shade their face and neck from the sun. This or a similar hat is a requirement for Oak Ridge students and must be worn daily for protection.

A lightweight, long-sleeved shirt can also provide extra coverage and protection from the sun's harmful UV rays (this is optional).

All children must have their own sunscreen that is kept on-site with an SPF of at least 30, ideally higher. We apply at drop-off, as often as needed, or after swimming or sweating. Please send the brand you prefer.

Footwear

It's important for children to wear appropriate footwear during outdoor activities. In a nature school setting, closed-toe shoes (ideally rain boots) or sandals with straps are the best options to protect your child's feet from rocks, sticks, and other debris. Make sure the shoes are comfortable and well-fitting to avoid blisters and other foot injuries. Our group loves Crocs!

Water Bottle

Dehydration is a risk during the summer months, especially during outdoor activities. Please send your child with a water bottle to school every day. They will be encouraged to drink water throughout the day. Please be sure to send a water bottle that your child can easily open on their own. Any brand is fine, all water bottles must be insulated to keep water cool.

Bug Repellent

Mosquitoes and other bugs are a common nuisance during the summer months. In a nature school setting, it's important to protect your child from insect bites that can cause discomfort and, in some cases, carry diseases. Please send your child with a bug spray that is safe for children and contains DEET or another effective insect repellent. We have had great success with this kind. This is also kept on site along with your child's sunscreen. We apply this typically twice per day (drop-off and on trips to the woods)

Extra Clothes

Summer weather can be unpredictable, and it's important to be prepared for sudden changes in temperature or weather conditions. Make sure your child has an extra set of clothes, including socks and underwear, in case they get wet or dirty during outdoor activities.

Backpack

Your child will need to bring a backpack to school each day. The backpack needs to be large enough for spare clothing and their water bottle. Please make sure their backpack isn't too large for them to carry themselves. Our group loves these backpacks for nature school.

Overall, dressing appropriately and bringing essential items can help your child stay comfortable, safe, and ready for outdoor adventures at Oak Ridge Nature School or any nature school in Minnesota. By taking these simple precautions, you can ensure that your child has a fun and enjoyable summer while staying healthy and protected from the sun, bugs, and other outdoor hazards.
